For this Pentecost service we hear Liturgist Steve Nelson, Rev. Marge Palmer, Rev. Dr. Ken Henry, and Katherine Stutz read in turn from Acts 2:1-21. Steve Nelson also reads from Corinthians 12:4-14. For his sermon Henry compares the story of Pentecost with the story of the City of Babel or Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9). Both stories start with the gathering of people. According to Henry, the story of Babel is not about trying to punish the people for their lack of respect to God. Instead it is about when people's love of sameness and homogeneity closes out of God's spirit. In both stories the people need to open up their lives to God's spirit, and God sends a scattering spirit, sending the people off in different directions.
